Basic KotOR Weapon Modelling Tutorial: Making a New Item - By Inyri Forge

Tools you will need:

  1. Open KotOR tool.

  2. Open "BIFs".

  3. Open "templates".

  4. Open "Blueprint, Item".

  5. Scroll down until you find "w_blaste_01.uti". Open it up and you should see a window with several tabs. This is our item template.

  6. Remember that gun model we made and had overwrite the original blaster? Go find your MDL and your MDX in your override folder. We'll need to rename them so they no longer overwrite. To make sure your mod is compatible with others, it's a good idea to pick a high number. Since my favorite number is 78, let's use that. Rename your files "w_blstrpstl_078.mdl" and "w_blstrpstl_078.mdx".

  7. The first thing you'll want to do is rename the Template ResRef and the Tag (these need to be the same). To be safe, we'll follow KotOR's naming scheme and call it "w_blaste_78" to match our model. Make sure you also change the Model Variation to 78. The rest on that tab is up to you.

  8. This step is optional. Go to the properties tab. This you can figure out on your own by playing around with it. See that asterisk? Double click it to bring up the properties menu. This is how you add bonuses or other special properties to your weapon.

  9. Finally, go to the Description tab. First, change the name of your weapon to whatever you want it to be called. Then, if you feel so inclined, give it a fitting description.

  10. When you're done, hit "save" and save it to your desktop as "w_blaste_78.uti", then move it to your override folder. Voila! You have a weapon! Spawn it in the game with the string "giveitem w_blaste_78".

  11. You might notice in-game it has a big white box instead of an icon. Icons need to be 64x64 pixels with a transparent background. Yes, this means you'll need software that can handle alpha channels. Luckily, GIMP works fine. Get a render of your weapon from gmax, delete the background, then paste it into GIMP, make sure the background is transparent, and export it as a 32 bit targa file named "iw_blstrpstl_078.tga" and put it in your override folder. There, now you should have an icon!
